Godly Play Storytelling

Curriculum driven Godly Play bible storytelling is an opportunity for children to hear traditional bible stories and wonder about them in a new and interactive way.  Su, a trained primary school teacher and religious studies graduate, gives the children an experience of play, wondering and working with the story designed to elicit the child’s own response to the story rather than tell the children what it might traditionally have meant for that particular faith group.  These lessons support a number of the Experiences and Outcomes for RME in schools.

Su completed her Godly Play Storytelling training in 2015. Before and since then she has been using this format to enhance the teaching of Christian RME in primary schools around Aberdeen as well as in other contexts with children and adults. Below are some testimonials and photos of Su at work.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan – P7 class

“Su has a fabulous storytelling voice which mesmerised all the children.  The story was pitched at the right level for the children allowing them all to engage with the learning.  There was wide range of play resources which the children could choose from in order to extend their learning.”

“The children were hooked straight away and all were engaged.  Children loved sharing their thoughts and every pupil had a voice.  It was a stress free, enjoyable environment.”  P1 and P5 teachers at St Peters Primary, Aberdeen

“Visual elements really help the children understand and hold their attention.  Su is respectful of everyone’s opinions and has a brilliant storytelling tone.  Well paced!  Hot seating was a great way to reflect and consolidate the story with pupils thinking in depth, supporting them to ask relevant questions. ”  P7 teacher, Aberdeen Primary School

“The children really enjoyed the activities and they truly reflected about the value of friendship and helping others. We were having some interesting discussions after break. Mostly they enjoyed the mystery of the props, also the metaphor around the box. The environment when telling the story was very calming and exciting. The rest of the activities where very popular within our class as well, especially the hot seat and the quiz.” Teacher
